I saw hell during transfer saga – Yobo

Super Eagles skipper, Joseph Yobo, has admitted that the trauma he passed though during the recently-concluded summer transfer window made the period the worst stage of his football career.

Speaking to the media at the Glass House on Monday, the Turkey-based defender said he specifically came to thank the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Aminu Maigari, for standing strongly behind him throughout the duration of his trying period.

“The president knew what I went through during the summer transfer season. He was very supportive, but I have not had time after my eventual transfer to come and thank him. I basically went to his office to thank and commend him for being supportive during my trying times. The transfer period was the worst time of my career,” he revealed.

Reacting to the match, the Nigerian defender said: “We are still at an advantage position, especially with our two away goals. That is why even in the Champions League when you score vital away goals like this, you count yourself lucky because you know that the return leg will be easier, even with one goal.

“It was a good situation for us because this is the best result we have gotten in my time in Super Eagles in a competitive match against Liberia, even with our super stars then. Yes, we made mistakes, but this is a match we should have wrapped up, but something happened and they equalised.

“But one good thing is that we did not lose the game. At least, we still have an advantage over the Liberians. It is not over for us. The only disappointment was that we were ahead and should have held on to it until the end of the game, but we gave it up. I believe we are still on course.

“Now we have this result. We know the second leg will be different. We must beat them at home, not even a draw because we are at an advantage. They will now be playing under pressure. I have been in this game for over a decade and I know how it goes. It is a must-win game for us with any margin.

“All we need is a win. It is very important that this great nation, Nigeria, will be at the next African Cup of Nations. We have worked very hard to reach  this stage. I believe that with God on our side, we will win at home,” he noted.
