Despite Super Eagles' 2-2 draw against Lone Star in the recent 2013 Nations Cup in Monrovia, goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu, has expressed confidence in the team's No. 1 goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, whom critics have blamed for conceding the two goals.
Enyeama who also praised the players, however, affirmed that they, especially the goalkeepers, had learnt a lot of lessons from the match.
In this interview, he stressed that the errors observed in the match would be addressed in a bid to win the return leg in October in Calabar.
What is your impression about the match in Monrovia? By all standard, it was a very good game and we got a very good result. An away draw is not a bad result. We have noticed some lapses and hope to correct the mistakes we have noticed.
As the goalkeeper trainer of the Super Eagles, what was your observation about the match? It was a very tough match. The boys did their best and I believe that we shall overturn the result in the second leg in Nigeria.
Let’s recall that Vincent Enyeama was in Lille for a year, but was not playing. Do you think this affected his performance in the game? I don’t want to deliberate on Enyeama’s performance. I don’t pick a player as a scapegoat because football is a team sport.
Considering the manner in which he conceded the two goals, do you still have confidence in Enyeama? I have said earlier that it was a tough match for the team and the goalkeeper. How can we blame Enyeama for the defeat? We cannot condemn him because he had a tough match. I still have confidence in him because we have seen the errors and we hope to correct them before the second leg in Nigeria in October.
What lessons do you think the goalkeepers must learn from the game? We have noticed that the two goals scored by the Lone Star came from aerial balls and there weren’t quick reactions from our players. The goalkeeper, too, failed to react quickly; likewise the defenders. They will surely learn from those circumstances and try not to repeat such errors in subsequent games.
